It's a Green Thing
There is so much talk about "going green " these days, I thought I would chime in with my own two cents. The more I hear about the "green" lifestyle the more I realize that I've always functioned in this way. When I was a kid, if we were bored we dug into mom's stash of old buttons and pieces of jewelry that had fallen apart and made a piece of art! Clothes, bikes, and skateboards were passed down from friends or older siblings, and we were happy about it! We bought our produce from local farmers as much as possible and got our eggs locally too. My mother was an Interior Decorator and was great at repurposing items to be useful and beautiful. This has been one of my most useful skills in my pursuit of contentment in my cottage. Thanks Mom!
Fast forward to my life today. My family and I live on 1.6 acres. We are in the city limits. However, we have a Compost bin, a garden, and a small flock of chickens. (The very spoiled girls!) Recycle, reuse, restore has been a way of life for my children also. My young son often trades out toys with his friends and loves to make his allowance stretch at tag sales.
During this Eclectic cottage adventure, I can't tell you how many times a friend has exclaimed, "Where did you get that?"
It's usually something that I have repurposed, picked up at a tag sale, or received for free (rescuing it from the landfill aka garbage picking!) I just smile and tell them, "You can't get it, it's one of a kind."
That's Green style!!!

I like your writing!
ReplyDeleteI love the word "repurposing". I will have to borrow that from you. I noticed you left out the part about your mom (my grandmother) washing aluminum foil and sandwich baggies only to be used again...and again...and again. Now THAT defines "recycling"!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour dearest neice,

Hey Girl!
ReplyDeleteYes, I did forget about the baggies, foil, and don't forget wrapping paper and ribbon!
